Metis 101: Import

After opening Metis Transform first click New Project from the toolbar.

Next from the menu select Project -> Import -> Import Excel data... Select the Metis101.xlsx file, this will take you to the Intelligent Import System where you will first see the first of two import screens: Configuring the file reader:


The data import configuration screen is primarily asking two questions: “where are the property headers?” and “where is the data?”. By default, import uses a machine learning based table detection system to find tables within Excel files and detect the header rows. As files can come in all shapes and sizes, the table detection system may not always locate property headers and data appropriately. However it can always be turned off, reverting back to a pre-defined default table layout. Manual configuration is also available from this point.

The Select Default Datum provides the user with an opportunity to bulk apply a common depth datum to all wells and individual samples in the import dataset. This is essential for the assignment of true vertical depth (TVD) values to project samples based on the presence of a measured depth (MD) value and a deviation survey/tie-point. These can most often be left as the defaults of Mean Sea Level and Drillers Reference respectively.

You should observe that this Excel file contains two sheets that we will import separately. For the moment continue using the selected Import First sheet. For the Metis101.xlsx file, the table detection correctly finds the table, defining appropriately the associated header and data rows. Click Next to proceed to the Import Data Linking screen.

The second import screen, Data linking, links the file data to the IGI data model. Each column within a file must link to an associated property, or be excluded, to proceed. The top half of the window shows a preview of the data (up to the first 100 rows) being imported while the bottom half of the screen shows the property mappings. Selecting a row on the bottom half of the screen will highlight the associated column in the data preview.

The linking screen will by default, display a first pass linking attempt using the property name and an alias system which associates common naming conventions to properties within the data model.

The Metis101.xlsx links without any problems, but does indicate multiple viable analysis group links available for the S1 property and for Base MD.Sample several viable Units of Measure (UoM). Review the links and click Import to proceed.

The Import Summary Screen shows the progress as the data is imported. It also gives a short description of the file; two samples and eight values that were all valid given the property and units chosen. It is possible to import invalid values for certain properties, such as text values in numeric properties, and these will be reported here. Click Finish to complete the import.

Now that we’ve imported our first file we can view the data in the project. The Artefact Manager, the right-hand panel in the application, can be used to open page views onto the database. Start by opening the Well sample summary page by either double-clicking or dragging the page onto the project workspace (dark grey area).



Under the Analysis View folder and subsequently the Pyrolysis folder, open the Pyrolysis (RE2) page to view the imported pyrolysis data.

We now need to import the second sheet in the Metis101.xlsx Excel File, entitled Import Second. Follow the same process as before but this time select the Import Second sheet on the initial Import Settings screen. The Linking screen and summary screen do not require any changes (ensure the same analysis group is chosen for the pyrolysis data as was selected in the first import) and can be stepped through in turn.
